"Books" Study - Summer 2025
It is clear that since the Second Vatican Council, the Church has been plagued with terrible doctrinal and liturgical confusion that has contributed to the worst crisis in the Church since the Arian crisis. In this 5-week book study, led by James McLean, director of adult formation, we will explore several landmark papal encyclicals from the last several hundred years that show the Church has condemned these errors long before most people were even aware of them.
Sessions meet on Tuesdays, May 27 to June 24, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

The Exodus - Summer 2025
St. Tom’s is committed to the serious study of scripture because we know that “ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ.” That is why St. Tom’s offers a seasonal scripture study every liturgical season with a trained instructor to help you deepen your knowledge of Christ through his word.
Summer 2025 - Exodus
The Exodus event is ancient, yet always new. It is the foundational event in which the Israelites came to know YHWH (the Lord) and to know themselves as a people. It is the experience from which we continue to know who God is and what it means to be God’s people. The passage from bondage to freedom, from death to life, is the story of all of the people of God. The Exodus narratives tell of the experience of the revelation of God, the personal divine presence acting in history to bring people to freedom, and is a key element in the heart of Jewish and Christian faith. Parishioner Alice Hession will share how the oral traditions of the Israelite people in the Exodus narratives are a call to new hope for followers of Christ today. All are welcome!

James McLean
James is the Director of Evangelization & Adult Formation for the Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Center at Purdue. James has served as a pastor in several churches over the last 10 years and is passionate about formation through serious scripture studies. He has both a Bachelor’s degree and a Masters degree in theology and is currently working on a Masters degree in Philosophy. James loves to study scripture through the eyes of the Catholic tradition and he specializes in Biblical interpretation and the many ways different groups and traditions approach scripture.- BA - Theology & Pastoral Ministry, Houghton University

Alice Hession
Alice is the former director of adult religious education for the Archdiocese of Louisville, KY. She graduated from Purdue University and earned a master's degree in theological studies from St. Meinrad School of Theology and an educational specialist degree in educational administration from Spalding University. She is the founding principal of St. John Paul II Catholic High School in Huntsville, Ala., and was the executive director of the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools. In 2006, she was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award from Central Catholic. Alice has been teaching the Scriptures for over 45 years and loves using scripture studies to deepen people's faith and love of God.- BA - Communication and Education, Purdue University
