In today’s Gospel reading (Lk 10:25-37), we encounter the parable of the Good Samaritan. Even though we may have heard this reading many times throughout our lives, we have probably always attributed it to being kind to our neighbors. Could there be more to this parable? Could we read it through the lens of being faithful stewards?
The Samaritan comes along the path and sees a very injured man who has been left to die. He is immediately moved with pity and compassion. He rushed to him, bandaged his wounds, transported him to an inn, continued to take care of him, and even paid the innkeeper to provide for this stranger’s needs.
When discussing stewardship, we often talk about gifts of time, talent, and treasure. How do we use our God-given gifts, similar to the Good Samaritan, to help those around us? The Samaritan interrupts his journey to take care of this injured man. He gives his time. The Samaritan bandages his wounds and uses skills to help heal the man. He gives his talents. The Samaritan pays the innkeeper for expenses. He gives his treasure.
Stewardship is love in action. It’s not simply tithing to your church or volunteering for an event; it’s an ongoing call from God to “love your neighbor as yourself” by using the gifts He has given us to make the world a better place.
Over the last six months, the Development Team has been working together to brainstorm ways to enhance a stronger culture and understanding of stewardship among Resident and Student Parishioners. We are working hard to re-establish and re-develop the development program here at St. Tom’s, while also increasing and strengthening an atmosphere of thanksgiving toward individuals who not only give financially but also give their time and talents. We have created a strategic plan and calendar for development within our community, executed a very successful Day of Giving, have crafted a stronger thank you and stewardship process for donors, and are working toward encouraging student giving.
We have discussed expanding our e-giving platforms to make it easier for students and alumni to give and instituting Masses of Thanksgiving for the many individuals who help make St. Tom’s the wonderful parish community it is.
Our Development Team will continue to provide updates as the year progresses. We are excited to share special ministries you can get involved with at the upcoming Ministry Fair that support giving of your time, talent, and treasure. We pray that, like the Good Samaritan, you feel empowered to use the gifts God has blessed you with to bring Christ’s love wherever you go.
Blessings,
