LifeGuides Coordinator

Reports to Director of Religious Education

Job Description

Responsible for assisting the Director of Religious Education, hereafter the DRE, with the administration of both the Religious Education (R.E.) and St. Tom’s Youth Ministry (STYMi) aspects of the LifeGuides program. This is a 10-15 hour per week volunteer position with at least 5 posted hours spent in the office. Duties and Responsibilities: The Coordinator position is a relatively fluid position compared to the other positions on this leadership team. The exact duties of the Coordinator may change from year to year depending on the strengths of the individual holding the Coordinator position and the other members of the leadership team. Because of this, the following is not a complete list of tasks which should be carried out by the Coordinator, but they are a good starting point.

Duties and Responsibilites

  1. Keeps the LifeGuides program focused on Christ
    1. Maintains a strong personal relationship with God through daily prayer and frequent visits to the Sacraments
    2. Prays for the LifeGuides program and all those involved
    3. Keeps the leadership team and the program as a whole focused on Christ by encouraging strong personal relationships with God, attendance at weekly liturgy and by incorporating prayer into all aspects of the LifeGuides program
    4. Creates and sustains a culture of prayer and Christ-centered community within the LifeGuides program
    5. Maintains the LifeGuides Prayer Warriors
  2. Coordinates and assists the leadership team
    1. Leads weekly meetings with the leadership team
    2. Assists Interns with special projects such as rice bowls, retreats and family programs
    3. Assists the DRE with diocesan required documentation
    4. Meets weekly with the DRE
  3. Coordinates the LifeGuides program
    1. Leads Tuesday evening Lead Teacher (L.T.) meetings
    2. Coordinates Tuesday planning meetings
    3. Works with the Interns and the DRE to coordinate the LifeGuides Retreat, Callout and banquets (one in the Fall, one in the Spring)
    4. Is on duty at St. Toms on Sunday mornings to ensure rooms are unlocked and prepared, to assist parishioners with questions and to assist catechists where needed
  4. Acts as the representative of the LifeGuides program
    1. Communicates with the PCS officers and other PCS organizations as necessary and attends MLT meetings when appropriate
    2. Participates in MLT training in August
  5. Leads recruitment for the LifeGuides program
    1. Recruits and trains LifeGuides and substitute catechists, ensuring they are Protocol trained prior to teaching
    2. Represents LifeGuides at larger PCS events for recruitment and/or coordinates a team to do so

Job Qualifications

A Purdue student who has successfully completed one semester as a LifeGuide and is current with respect to diocesan child safety protocol training. The candidate must possess good communication skills, solid organizational skills and be comfortable carrying a leadership position. It is highly preferential, but not required, that the candidate have experience with both R.E. and STYMi.

Elementary Intern

Reports to Director of Religious Education

Job Description

Responsible for assisting the DRE with administration of the RE program for 3rd grade and under. This is a 10-15 hour per week volunteer position with at least 5 posted hours spent in the office.

Duties and Responsibilites

  1. Leads lesson planning for the elementary grades
    1. Leads the elementary catechists in their section of the Tuesday planning meeting and oversees lesson planning
    2. Ensures that the diocesan curriculum is implemented
    3. Reviews the elementary lesson plans which are submitted weekly
  2. Coordinates the catechists for the elementary grades
    1. Communicates with the Church Mice for room set-ups
    2. Assists and reminds elementary catechists to send a weekly parent Flocknote and any other updates
    3. Reports supply and material needs to LifeGuides Secretary
    4. Is on duty at St. Toms on Sunday mornings to ensure rooms are unlocked and prepared, to assist parishioners with questions and to assist catechists where needed
    5. Plans and coordinates day retreats for 1st Reconciliation and 1st Communion alongside the 2nd grade catechists and the DRE
  3. Collaborates with the leadership team to implement special events
    1. Participates in MLT training in August
    2. Works with the Coordinator, the other Interns and the DRE to develop and implement the LifeGuides Retreat, Callout, and banquets (one in the Fall, one in the Spring)
  4. Takes an active part in recruitment for the LifeGuides program
    1. Collaborates with the Coordinator and fellow Interns in the recruitment of Purdue Catholic Students, specifically for catechists in 3rd grade and under
    2. Recruits and trains LifeGuides and substitute catechists, ensuring they are Protocol trained prior to teaching
    3. Assists in maintaining accurate protocol training and FIRE records for elementary catechists
  5. Is an active participant of the leadership team
    1. Meets weekly with the leadership team
    2. Meets weekly with the DRE

Middle School Intern

  1. Leads lesson planning for the middle school grades
    1. Leads the middle school catechists in their section of the Tuesday planning meeting and oversees lesson planning
    2. Ensures that the diocesan curriculum is implemented
    3. Reviews the middle school lesson plans which are submitted weekly
  2. Coordinates the catechists for the middle school grades
    1. Communicates with the Church Mice for room set-ups

Confirmation Intern

Duties and Responsibilites

  1. Leads lesson planning for the Confirmation Preparation classes
    1. Leads the Confirmation Preparation catechists in their section of the Tuesday planning meeting and oversees lesson planning
    2. Ensures that the diocesan curriculum is implemented
    3. Reviews the Confirmation Preparation lesson plans which are submitted weekly
  2. Coordinates the catechists for the Confirmation Preparation classes
    1. Communicates with the Church Mice for room set-ups
    2. Assists and reminds Confirmation Preparation catechists to send a weekly parent Flocknote and any other updates
    3. Reports supply and material needs to LifeGuides Secretary
    4. Is on duty at St. Toms on Sunday mornings to ensure rooms are unlocked and prepared, to assist parishioners with questions and to assist catechists where needed
    5. Coordinates with Confirmation Lead Teachers for Liturgy Mass
    6. Plans and implements a Confirmation weekend retreat with the Confirmation Team, the DRE and, if possible, the Youth Ministry Intern
    7. Collects baptism information, sponsor names and Confirmation names; keeps accurate records of candidates’ service hours throughout the year
  3. Collaborates with the leadership team to incorporate special events
    1. Participates in MLT training in August
    2. Works with the Coordinator, the other Interns and the DRE to develop and implement the LifeGuides Retreat, Callout, and banquets (one in the Fall, one in the Spring)
  4. Takes an active part in recruitment for the LifeGuides program
    1. Collaborates with the Coordinator and fellow Interns in the recruitment of Purdue Catholic Students, specifically for catechists in grades 8 and 9

Youth Ministry Intern

Reports to Director of Religious Education

Job Description

Responsible for assisting the DRE with administration and implementation of the middle school and high school youth ministry program (STYMi). This is a 10-15 hour per week volunteer position with at least 5 posted hours spent in the office.

Duties and Responsibilites

  1. Coordinates the STYMi program
    1. Leads the youth ministry LifeGuides in their section of the Tuesday planning meeting to ensure that activities are appropriate, safe and engaging
    2. Ensures that all youth ministry events are Christ-centered and focused upon building up the faith of the youth in attendance
    3. Leads the advertising of all youth nights and programs
    4. Reports supply and material needs to LifeGuides Secretary
    5. Plans, advertises and implements mission trips and social events for youth ministry members
  2. Acts as the face of the STYMi program
    1. Communicates with families of youth active in the youth nights and programs as necessary
    2. Is on duty at STYMi events to ensure all activities are prepared, to assist parents with questions and to assist LifeGuides where needed
    3. Responds to any questions or concerns that parents may have via face to face meeting, email or Flocknote, as appropriate
  3. Collaborates with the leadership team to incorporate special events
    1. Participates in MLT training in August
    2. Plans and implements a middle school day-retreat with the middle school catechists, the DRE and the Middle School Intern
    3. Plans and implements a Confirmation weekend retreat with the Confirmation Team, the DRE and the Confirmation Intern
    4. Works with the Coordinator, the other Interns and the DRE to develop and implement the LifeGuides Retreat, Callout, and banquets (one in the Fall, one in the Spring)
  4. Takes an active part in recruitment for the LifeGuides program
    1. Collaborates with the Coordinator and fellow Interns in the recruitment of Purdue Catholic Students, specifically for youth ministers for the STYMi program
    2. Assists in maintaining accurate protocol training and FIRE records for the youth ministry LifeGuides
  5. Is an active participant of the leadership team
    1. Meets weekly with the leadership team
    2. Meets weekly with the DRE

Job Qualifications

A Purdue student who has successfully completed one semester as a LifeGuide and is current with respect to diocesan child safety protocol training. The candidate must possess good communication skills, solid organizational skills and be comfortable carrying a leadership position. It is preferential, but not required, that the candidate has been a volunteer with the STYMi program.

LifeGuides Secretary (Only Eligible as a Work-Study Position)

Reports to Director of Religious Education

Job Description

Responsible for assisting the DRE, Coordinator and Interns with administration of the LifeGuides program. This is a 10 hour per week volunteer position with at least 3 posted hours spent in the office.

Duties and Responsibilites

  1. Takes notes during planning meetings and distributes notes after the meeting
    1. Leadership team meeting (1 hour)
    2. Tuesday planning meeting (1.5 hours)
  2. Runs the front desk on Sunday mornings when RE is in session (8:30am-12:00pm; 3.5 hours)
    1. Assists parishioners with questions
    2. Assists catechists where needed
    3. Accomplishes tasks during down time as directed by the DRE, Coordinator and Interns
  3. Has 3 posted office hours (3 hours)
    1. Meets weekly with the DRE
    2. Assists in maintaining accurate protocol training and FIRE records for the LifeGuides
    3. Assists in advertisements, room reservations and routine emails for various aspects of the LifeGuides program
    4. Receives supply needs from the Interns and orders new supplies when necessary
    5. Accomplishes other tasks as directed by the DRE, Coordinator and Interns
  4. Is available to assist in various other tasks (1 hour)
