Message from Fr. Chris Saliga, OP
Last year, when Fr Tom asked that I take the lead with our Hunger Hike efforts, I had no idea what this might mean concretely. Simply put, I was utterly clueless, and I wasn’t really even sure of how to appropriately approach it. As you may recall, COVID had us fairly well shut down at that point.
And yet, a mask-protected Duane Sellers came to the rescue. As I listened to Duane, I was blown away to learn just how proactive our St Tom’s parish had been for nearly three decades. After meeting with Duane, others chimed in and helped me get up to speed with my appreciation for the people who are the parish–God’s hands so to speak. I realized that the people of St Tom’s would surely continue to roll. And roll we did!
Last year saw St Tom’s provide more than $35,000.00 toward feeding the hungry, both locally and in Haiti. How amazing last year was, especially given the fact that the hunger hike itself was reduced to a COVID-imposed virtual event.
What we hope to do this year is build further parochial momentum, residents and students alike, such that we meet or exceed last year’s $35,000.00 goal. Given the fact that this year’s Hunger Hike is not merely virtual, but real, we now enjoy renewed opportunity to help folks in need.
Lovingly and intelligently feeding the hungry amounts to one of those corporeal (AKA bodily) works of mercy. Moreover, concluding our efforts by hiking together does a whole lot to raise awareness. As you all know, these things don’t happen by merely talking the talk. You and I must actually walk the walk.
So please do join our team as a fundraising hiker on the St Tom’s section of LUM’s Hunger Hike’s page HERE. Then reach out to friends, family, and other loved ones asking them to donate in support of your efforts.
If you can’t jump on board as a fundraising hiker, please help me reach my $10,000.00 fundraising goal HERE.
The actual hike will take place on Sunday the 19th of September at Riehle Plaza. We start hiking at 2:00pm. Read more about this year’s hunger hike on LUM’s Hunger Hike page HERE.
Let’s Roll!
